When we’re overwhelmed, stressed and busy, it can be helpful to take a step back and take some small but meaningful action. This can make such a difference in not only how things function, but more importantly how we feel. So in the spirt of taking one thing at a time and knowing we don’t have to be perfect, here’s a simple step by step guide to tackling the often chaotic pantry. And remember, the end result doesn’t need to be social media worthy, it just needs to function! But if your goal is a picture perfect pantry, this will still get you started 😉
1. Take everything out. This will make it easier to figure out how to best arrange things later.
2. Check expiration dates. Depending on the item some things are totally fine past the best by date. If you come across items you just don’t care for, consider donation. Food pantries are in desperate need right now.
3. Categorize. Think breakfast, baking, pasta, snacks, etc. Depending on what you have this will look different for everyone, but you can even get more specific with categories, for example “chili” or “s’mores”.
4. Clean surfaces. Before putting everything away, clean shelves, drawers, etc.
5. Gather some helping tools. See if you have anything to assist with keeping things organized and consolidating. Think baskets, turntables, canisters or even repurposed boxes. Of course you can start with this step, but sometimes it’s better to see what you’re working with first if you want to buy fresh, and then you’ll have a better idea of what you need.
6. Label. It makes a huge difference because it saves time when looking for something, plus it holds you accountable when putting things back. Again, there are lots of nice options out there, but a post-it or a small piece of paper and tape can do the trick for now!
7. Put things away. Play around with placement and think about function. For example, kids snacks usually work best on a low shelf. And remember, nothing is permanent, you can always change it!
